News Wars – In the immediate wake of last night’s mass shooting in Las Vegas–where at least 58 people were murdered and more than 500 were injured–House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) sent a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan (R.-Wisc.) saying that Congress “has a moral duty” to address what she called an “epidemic of gun violence.”

In addressing the issue, she said, the House should both enact legislation to “strengthen” the background checks conducted when people purchase guns and impanel a special committee on “gun violence”

National Guard to Seize Guns and Ammo ahead of Hurricane Irma

U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp signed an emergency order allowing the seizure of private guns, ammunition, explosives and property the National Guard may need to respond to Hurricane Irma.

Mapp signed the order Monday in preparation for Hurricane Irma. The order allows the Adjutant General of the Virgin Islands to seize private property they believe necessary to protect the islands, subject to approval by the territory’s Justice Department.

The New American – Congressional Democrats who were practicing for Thursday night’s game with Republicans near the field where House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot gathered to pray for their colleagues. A photo posted on social media by Representative Ruben Kihuen (D-Nev.) shows about 25 of them huddled together in their dugout with their heads bowed. Kihuen posted this comment along with the photo: “Me [sic] and my House Democrat colleagues saying a prayer for our House Republicans and Senate GOP baseball colleagues after hearing about this morning’s horrific shooting at their practice field.”
